SIRIN LABS, the creators of SOLARIN, a security-focused phone, are currently developing a new blockchain phone, the Finney, and have announced major partnerships ahead of the phone’s anticipated launch.
While football superstar Lionel Messi is already a brand ambassador, the company has now signed middleweight boxing star Gennady Golovkin or “Triple G” to promote the phone. The latest announcement also highlights an integration with Portion, a crypto-friendly art auction house platform, which will come pre-installed in the Finney phone.
The crypto space saw major growth in 2017, followed by a lukewarm 2018, but SIRIN LABS was one of the early birds, concluding a massive token sale raising $157 million to develop and market their new ‘ultra-secure’ blockchain phone, the Finney.
Priced at $999, Finney specs include a 12MP rear and 8MP front camera, a 6-inch iPhone X-like notched display, 128GB of internal storage and a certified Android mod. The phone also has a cold-storage crypto wallet and the Sirin OS will support dApps and crypto conversion features.
While the need for a blockchain phone may be over-stated, it is undoubtedly a niche product which would appeal majorly to the crypto community. SIRIN LABS also tested a similar model with their SOLARIN phone, which did not really take off.
With the Finney, they are banking on crypto, but even then, the smartphone market is hugely competitive, and it remains to be seen whether the Finney phone, upon its release, can compete with the likes of iPhone (given its price tag), since most people are unlikely to be carrying two phones, just because they dabble in crypto.
