Samsung has been teasing us about its foldable mobile phone for quite some time now, although details about the hardware and it’s actual appearance are sketchy and purposely kept in the dark by the Korean giant.
However, the company has now officially announced its next Unpacked 2019 event for February 20, 2019, with a teaser which hints at the foldable phone’s unveiling with the tagline: “The Future Unfolds”.
Watch the official Samsung Unpacked 2019 teaser below:
With advancements in display technology, Samsung has managed to create the Infinity Flex display, which can bend beyond just curving around the edges, and has resulted in a completely foldable phone, which can unfold to become a large tablet.
The foldable phone, to be released under the Galaxy X moniker, was recently previewed at the company’s annual developer conference in November 2018. You can view the unveiling clip below, courtesy The Sun:
While the exact hardware specifications are not known yet, we can assume the Galaxy X will feature cutting-edge processor and perhaps 6 or 8 gigabytes of RAM. What is most interesting, however, is the device’s practical usage as both a phone and a tablet. This is a form-factor that can actually change the way devices are designed in the future, removing the need for buying two different devices for communication and content consumption.
Incidentally, it was Samsung, with its original Galaxy Note phone, which brought the phablet trend to the mainstream, making it immensely popular, despite initial skepticism, and resulting in competitors, including Apple, creating the big-screen devices we see today.
Can the company do it one more time? We will have to wait and see, but a lot will depend on the device’s actual design, size and once again, practicality.
On a side note, Max Weinbach from XDA shared a leak earlier, speculating that we are going to see four iterations of the new Galaxy S10 phone at the event, with the following specs:
- Galaxy S10 Lite: 4GB of RAM + 128GB storage
- Galaxy S10: 6GB of RAM + 128GB, or 256GB storage
- Galaxy S10 Plus: 6GB, or 8GB of RAM + 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage
- Galaxy S10 Plus (5G Model): 8GB, or 12GB of RAM + 256GB, 512GB or 1TB storage
You can watch the Samsung Unpacked 2019 event live via the official website, starting February 20, 2019, 11 AM PST.
Meanwhile, according to rumors, an Apple event may be expected in March, unveiling the long-anticipated AirPods 2, AirPower charging mat and new iPads.
