Huawei Honor Zero is a Minimalistic Smartwatch on GearBest for $89.89

Over the past months, we’ve covered smartwatches outside the Android Wear category (K8 3G and ODROID SW 25) and these watches were mostly from lesser-known Chinese manufacturers.

However, they still brought good value to the table, especially for the price points they were on. Today we will be looking at one of the more renowned brands, Huawei, and its new Honor Zero smartwatch.

The Huawei Honor Zero remains distinctly different from other smartwatches out there as it doesn’t run Android Wear and it’s not presented as a “Smart Watch Phone” or a “Smartphone Watch” with cellular capabilities.

Design and build

The device is pretty much a souped-up version of your regular wristwatch that has the included advantage of being able to synchronize with your smartphone including a few other nifty features that are appreciable and we will touch on them later in the article.

The Huawei Honor Zero smartwatch has a circular time telling exterior protected with glass and encased in stainless steel with a quite familiar buckle type band.

The device is clad with a diamond shaped TPU band with a medical grade material that is skin friendly and anti-allergic.

The diamond shaped grid pattern does not only mitigate the chances of the watch slipping up or down your wrist during daily activities, but also adds a unique and pleasant look to it.

It is also exciting to know that the Zero band is waterproof and dust-proof as it comes with an IP68 rating that will ensure that your device is completely safe from spills and accidental drops in water.

You can even get in the shower or swim with it if you feel like it. And considering the strap material, you have no need to worry about how well it will hold up in the long-term because the TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) is pretty much resistant to most liquids including common oily substances you’d mostly come across.

The new Huawei wristwatch comes with a passive OLED screen with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels packed in a screen size of 1.06 inch, which is pretty much just about the standard found in most smartwatches except that the resolution is just a bit disappointing.

Given that it’s an OLED (organic light emitting diode) you won’t notice much difference compared to some of the LCDs with higher resolutions, found in other smartwatches.

The organic materials in OLED screens enable them to light up when electricity passes through, thereby disregarding the need for a backlight (as you would normally need on a device with an LCD display) and saving up some extra battery  juice for your long day.

Added advantage of an OLED screen includes a better contrast (true blacks and whites) and true depth coloring compared to other display technologies.

OLED screens have been featured for a long time on Samsung smartphones as they are one of the manufacturers pioneering the technology.

The Korean giant used the AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology for its phones, and the tech is mainly for devices with a larger display while PMOLED (Passive Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) is for smartwatches and other IoT devices.

Not straying too far from the point, we believe you won’t find the Huawei Honor Zero’s screen disappointing.

Nowadays if you hear anyone mention a smartwatch, the obvious smart additions are expected to be included in the device and in the case of the Zero smartwatch, these include Bluetooth 4.1 for pairing with your smartphone and a Pedometer for your workout and a complete system monitoring capability.

We mentioned earlier that the device does not run Android wear but rather a custom watch OS by Huawei. However, it will support your Android smartphone (provided it runs KitKat 4.4 and up) and iOS versions of 7 and up.

Added to the software is an incoming call mute feature that essentially enables you to mute any call you might have while in an important meeting. Plus, there’s a sleep monitoring and a sedentary reminder feature that will help you monitor your sleeping habits and remind you to rest, depending on how active your body might get.

The other features that come along with the software include:

  • Health tracker: Sleep monitor, Pedometer, Sedentary reminder
  • Messaging: Message reminder, Message checking
  • Bluetooth calling and Phone call reminder
  • Four different watch faces

Every other thing

Powering the wristwatch is a Cortex M4 STM32F411 SoC that has just enough data processing power to keep your watch running smooth and fast without any hiccups whatsoever.

The Zero wristwatch is equipped with a 70mAh battery that charges with a pogo pin and supports fast charging. Huawei promises that it will give you a full charge in 1.5hrs that will last you for four working days with regular use.
