HTC M8 & M7 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update for US Carrier Versions Delayed

Last updated on

HTC One M8 and M7 owners in the US who were looking forward to a February 1, 2015 update to Android 5.0 Lollipop will be disappointed because the company will be unable to deliver on the 90-day deadline.

The company promised last year that US owners of One M8 and M7 will be getting Android 5.0 updates only 90 days after Google’s official release. However, according to HTC’s Vice President of Product Management, the updates will not be ready in time due to several bugs and issues in Android’s latest version.

Google’s own update cycle was also delayed in the case of Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 devices as the company worked on delivering final patches and fixes. An update on HTC’s official website (here) states, “We’ve been working hard in the labs with Google and our carrier partners ever since the code release and are making great progress so far, but if you’ve been following the progress of this rollout, you will know that Google has had to address several issues with this release.”

“We’ve been diligently working to fix some of them on our end and incorporating Google’s fixes as quickly as possible, but despite everyone’s best efforts, some carrier versions of the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) will not meet our 90-day goal, which is February 1st”.

Interestingly, owners of the unlocked, Google Play and Developer editions of HTC One M8 and M7 received the Android Lollipop update and only the carrier versions of the phones are lagging behind. However, this isn’t the first such instance, as HTC, which initiated the 90-day update period back with the release of Jelly Bean, also had troubles rolling out Android KitKat updates for the carrier version of HTC One M7 last year.

On the other hand, LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5 owners have also started getting the Android 5.0 updates, but even now, the latest version of Android accounts for less than 0.1% of all Android devices.

While Nexus and Motorola devices are often the first to get new Android updates, the reason behind delays by other manufacturers often has to do with the use of custom skins like BlinkFeed and TouchWiz.
