Deleting files and data by accident can cause a lot of hassles for you. Any digital storage device, including Android phones, can lose data in several ways and you’ve most likely had this problem when important text messages, photos or videos got accidentally removed.
It might seem like once the files are deleted, they are gone forever. However, this is not true. Fortunately for you, there is an excellent free tool that can help you recover deleted texts, photos and videos from your Android phone and tablet.
We’re talking about Wondershare’s Dr.Fone Toolkit, and this is a guide for recovering deleted data from Android devices.
Downloading the Toolkit
You need to start by downloading the Dr.Fone toolkit from Wondershare. There is a free trial available and if you like it you can also buy it – a personal license costs just under $60, so it’s not bad if you’re serious about recovering lost photos and videos.
You will need to download the Android client (linked above) and choose your OS – the toolkit is available for both Windows and Mac.
Step 1: Connect your phone to your computer
Once you have connected your android phone to the computer using a data cable, start the dr.fone toolkit for Android that you have installed on your computer. Then, select the ‘Data Recovery’ option.
Ensure that you have enabled USB debugging on your Android phone first (it is in developer options).
If the OS of your Android phone is 4.2.2 or higher, you will get a popup message on your Android phone. Click Ok to enable USB debugging.
Step 2: Choose the type of files to scan
Once your Android phone is successfully connected to the computer, the dr.fone toolkit for Android will provide a display of all the different types of data that it can recover. These include the options to recover deleted texts, photos, WhatsApp messages, documents, videos and more.
All file types are selected as the default setting. You can leave this setting, or you can specify which particular types of files you want to recover. Then, click ‘Next’ to continue with the recovery process.
Step 3: Find lost data on your Android phone by scanning it
Dr.fone’s toolkit has two scanning modes. You can select the ‘Standard Mode’ or the ‘Advanced Mode’ to proceed with the data recovery process. It is recommended that you try the ‘Standard Mode’ first as it is more quick and easy to perform. Then, click ‘Start’ to begin the scanning and analyzing of your Android device.
The process of scanning will take a few minutes at least as the toolkit scans your device trying to recover any deleted data. You will have to be a little patient in this process.
Keep in mind that you might get a Superuser authorization notification during the scan. If this notification appears, just click ‘Allow’ to proceed. If it doesn’t appear, then move on.
Step 4: Look over the results of the scan and select which data to recover
Once the scan is finished, you can preview all the files that you can recover one by one, including photos, contacts, texts, call history and more. Check mark the items that you want to recover and then click ‘Recover’. This will copy all these recovered files onto your computer.
Recovering data from your SD card
If you have deleted data on your SD card by accident, then you can use this toolkit to recover the deleted data as well.
Step 1: Use a card reader or data cable to connect your SD card to your computer
Start the dr.fone toolkit for Android on the computer and select the ‘Data Recovery Toolkit’. Then select the ‘Data Recovery’ option at the bottom of the page.
Once your SD card has been detected by the toolkit, you will see the following window. Choose your SD card and press ‘Next’ to proceed with the data recovery process.
Step 2: Scan your SD card for deleted data
As recommended before, you should choose the ‘Standard Mode’ instead of the ‘Advanced Mode’. Once the scanning process is complete, you will be shown a list of files that you can recover from the SD card.
Step 3: Select what you want to recover from your SD card
Once the scanning is complete and you have a list of all the files that you can recover, simply select all the files that you want to recover. Similarly, uncheck those files which you don’t want to recover.
Android data recovery for Mac users
Step 1: Install the toolkit on your Mac and run it
Once you have downloaded and installed the dr.fone toolkit on your Mac, you will see the following main window.
Step 2: Connect the Android device with your Mac
You can use a data cable to connect your Android phone to your Mac. Once the Mac detects the device, the toolkit will also detect it on its own.
Similar to the method for Windows computers, you can select which types of files to scan for or you can scan for all types of files.
Step 4: Scan the device to recover deleted data
Once the scanning has finished, you can look at all of the deleted files that you can now recover. Select whichever files you want to recover and then click ‘Recover’. This will save these files on your Mac.
