DNS or the Domain Name System is integral to the working of internet services and the default DNS servers we all use are those set up by our ISPs (Internet Service Providers). If you want to change the DNS servers on your Android phone or tablet you are probably seeking a faster connection, more security or to browse the internet unrestricted by geographic filters.
In this guide we will be looking at methods to change DNS servers on Android devices (Wifi, 3G and 4G networks) for both, root users and those without root permissions. You’re going to need to download apps which we will be listing below along with the steps you will need to perform to make changes in your connection settings.
Changing DNS on Android without Root
You can change DNS servers on your Android device even without having root permissions but you will be restricted to affecting only your Wifi networks and not 3G or 4G data connections.
In order to do so, follow these steps:
- Go to your device settings
- Select Wifi options
- Tap and hold your connected Wifi network and choose “Modify Network”
- Tap on “Show Advanced Options” box
- Change your “IP Settings” to “Static”
- Add your desired DNS server addresses under the DNS 1 and DNS 2 fields
- Tap “Save”, disconnect and reconnect to that Wifi network to get changes.
You can also download an app called DNSet and use it to change the DNS settings on your Android device without root permissions. The good thing about using this app is that your new DNS settings will be applicable for both Wifi and 3G/4G networks. While the free version only lets you set your DNS to Google’s public servers, the paid version gives you the option to set any custom DNS servers.
Changing DNS on Android with Root
If you have a rooted Android device you can easily change the DNS servers for Wifi and 3G/4G networks using free apps which will be listed below. However, please note that root permissions should be used responsibly to prevent damage to your device or loss of data.
In order to move ahead, you can simply download the two apps listed below and try them on your device. While DNS Changer by Eddy Pey works for Wifi and data networks, it has issues with newer versions of Android. If this doesn’t work, you should try DNS Changer by Emre KOÇ instead.
