If you don’t know about the BLOCKS modular smartwatch then you should really look it up. It’ not just a smartwatch, it is one that lets you customise its features to fit your style and expectations by using a variety of modules.
The feature-flexible smartwatch will be is set to begin shipping to customers in the month of September. This is of course following a $1.6 million Kickstarter campaign in 2015 and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes work which have helped turn the idea of a modular smartwatch into a real life product.
BLOCKs started showing off the final designs for their hardware in early June and Serge Didenko, their co-founder had a podcast interview on the LPX Show where he discussed the company’s vision for a wearable gadget with a wrist strap that is more than just a fashion statement. BLOCKS houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor with a 1.4 inch, 400 x 400px round AMOLED display and. It doesn’t run Android Wear but instead a custom version of Android and it comes with a number of other apps preinstalled and can display alerts and notifications from your mobile phone.
The unusual part of the smartwatch is its strap. It is made up of a series of modules that can be snapped together, with each having the ability to contain a battery, sensor, or other hardware.
There will be a handful of modules including a heart rate sensor, an extra battery, an environment sensor, GPS, flashlight, and a programmable button, all of which will be available at launch. There are expected upcoming modules like NFC, SIM card, fingerprint, and gesture control hardware.
The idea behind the modular smartwatch is that you don’t need to make use of the same modules all the time after buying the exact hardware you want for it. All the modules are “hot swappable”, meaning, for example, that you can remove a battery and replace it with a heart rate sensor before a workout without rebooting the watch.
The idea of a modular watch is spectacular and unique, given that it’s customizable and can change over time. If you want to get one you can pre-order a BLOCKS smartwatch plus four modules for $330. Most of the modules are expected to sell for around $30 to $50.
