Retro gaming is a big niche these days and is popular around the world from Japan to the United States, Europe and beyond. However, with so many great, old games out there, it is not always easy to know which ones to play, and that’s where we can help! Here is our list of some of our favourite retro games you can download and play on your Android phone or tablet right now…
First up, to get those nostalgic feelings flowing, we’d say that you can’t really go wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s a great platformer, and it’s still just as popular today, with a 4.4-star rating on Play Store, based on over 50,000 reviews. It’s guaranteed to transport you back to the 1990s when the 16-bit Sega Megadrive was state-of-the-art and one of the top game consoles.
Sonic has spawned multiple sequels since then, and its influence is still very much felt now with the recent release of Sonic Mania for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, billed as the “ultimate celebration of past and present”.
Another classic is Tetris — quite possibly one of the best puzzle games around. Not that long ago it was reported it was the best-selling paid-downloaded game of all time, and it has a 4-star rating on Play Store, based on 325,000 reviews.
Originally released back in 1984, it found its audience a few years later on Nintendo’s Game Boy, and it is just as obsessive 30 years hence. It’s was also reported last year that a movie version could be on the way (we kid you not!) and that it will, in fact, be a sci-fi trilogy.
Similarly, massive in its day was Pac-Man, which was developed by Namco. It first hit arcades in 1980, and today there are numerous spin-offs. We’d say that if you want a proper “retro” experience, you should go for the original version; however, Pac-Man 256 is also good and features 15 power-ups to help you avoid the ghosts and eat the dots.
If you like that, then you’ll probably love Snake ’97, the classic mobile game from the late 1990s when mobile phones were, well, pretty much just phones. Introduced on the Nokia 6110, it was based on the 1976 arcade game Blockade and, although simple, it is strangely habit-forming and currently free to download.
You can also play some great classic slot games on your Android phone or tablet like those that exist in real life and are based on elements in popular culture. One of our favourites is Popeye Classic Slots. However, there are many others, including those featuring Superman, Godzilla, Ghostbusters and Sex in the City. Think of a popular film or TV series, and you’ll be almost guaranteed to find a slots game based on it.
Of course, honorable mentions must go the likes of Bricks: Demolition, Crossy Road (a modern take on Frogger), and the shoot ‘em up game Galaxy Shooter.
