While Android Wear hasn’t really caught on, LG is still giving it a go with a new watch announced ahead of the MWC 2015. The LG Watch Urbane, as the name suggests, is aimed at the luxury market and is being pitched as a refined device for Android wear fans.
The Korean company had previously released the LG G Watch R, which is quite similar to the Watch Urbane, but the latter has a complete metal case polished to sparkle in golden and silver finishes.
If you have been interested in Android smart wear, you’ve probably seen the Moto 360, which we personally loved, except for the small space at the bottom of the display, which ruined the look for us a little. Nevertheless, according to market research for the year 2014, Moto 360 was the leading Android wear watch sold, and LG’s own offering resembles it a lot.
According to Juno Cho, CEO of LG’s mobile unit, “LG Watch Urbane is an important part of our strategy to develop wearable devices that are worn and viewed as everyday accessories, not electronic gadgets.”
Moreover, the press release from LG states that the Watch Urbane is designed for the “sophisticated and cosmopolitan wearer” and people “looking to add both style and high-tech flare to their everyday lives”.
Now, with Apple poised to release its own smartwatch this year, competition in this market segment will be on the rise, and LG is trying to target the more up-scale consumers as opposed to other manufacturers, trying to capture the sporty, fitness fans.
While it remains to be seen whether LG can pull more consumers with this new release, it is evident that the Korean company is trying to avoid the same mistakes it made in the smartphone arena, where it ended up lagging way behind players like Samsung and Sony.
As for its specs, the Urbane will be featuring a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 processor with Google’s Android Wear OS, 4GB internal memory, 512 MB RAM, a 1.3 inch display, a 410 mAh battery and IP67 certification, making it water and dust resistant.
